2FA – Which app should I use on iPhone or iPad?

Use the built-in Passwords app

If you’re on an iPhone or iPad, you already have everything you need – no extra app to download.

Apple’s Passwords app (built into recent versions of iOS) allow you to add 2FA codes to saved login profiles, and it’s already on your device.

A couple of things to check first

Important: Your Apple Passwords app needs your login saved so you can attach the 2FA code to the profile

You need to have completed one of the following steps during login:

  1. Saved your password during login. If you haven’t saved your DefectWise login there yet, you may need to logout and back in to receive a save password prompt.
  2. Signed in with your Apple ID. Apple sign-ins will automatically show in your Passwords app allowing you to add a 2FA code.

Setting it up

  1. When you scan the QR code in DefectWise, choose to add it as a Verification Code in Passwords (you can touch and hold the QR code in Safari to do this automatically).
  2. Passwords will save the code generator for your DefectWise account, alongside your saved password.
  3. Next time you log in, your phone will suggest the current code above your keyboard automatically – just tap to fill it in.

Full instructions from Apple: Use the Passwords app to create, manage, and share passwords and passkeys

Prefer a separate app instead?

If you’d rather use a dedicated app (for example, if you already use one for other accounts), Google Authenticator is a solid free option:

Download Google Authenticator from the App Store

Either option works – pick whichever is easier for you. If you’re not sure, we’d suggest sticking with the built-in Passwords app since there’s nothing new to install.
